LADY BETH at the WINDING STAIR

There is something so special about visiting a city and discovering its most treasured bookshops. Dublin is no exception and can brag confidently on a host of the most wonderful, quirky labyrinths of book joy for the eager reader to browse in. One such treasure is The Winding Stair on Ormond Quay, which overlooks the River Liffey and faces out towards our iconic Ha’penny Bridge.

One of our oldest surviving independent bookshops, it is filled with timeless charm, atmosphere and character. A relaxed and friendly oasis in the centre of a city getting on with the business of being busy. Whether you’re looking for new, unusual or second-hand, their range of collections are extensive, with lovely staff always on hand for recommendations from areas of fiction, poetry, drama, current affairs, gardening, cookery, art and design, humour, non-fiction, children’s, literary magazines, cards, notebooks and tote bags.

They are also great supporters of Irish writers, for which I am so grateful! Born and bred in Dublin, when I was a kid in the 70’s, on a Saturday, I would often hop on a bus into town, just to pass the time and usually with nothing in my pocket but the bus fare back home. My bus stopped along the quays, just beyond the Winding Stairs and I would peek in through the window and wonder at the treasures that waited within, but never dared step inside.

My love for reading was in my blood even then, but confidence wasn’t!! Fast forward all these years later and there are scenes from my novel, LADY BETH, that are set right there, in my beloved city, along those quay walls. Never in my dreams could I have imagined that one day, my book would sit on a shelf in that beautiful setting! Something that fills me with pride, I don’t mind saying!

So do pop in my friends, have a browse, support a wonderful, independent bookshop, and if you are so inclined, you might just pick up a copy of LADY BETH!!

The Winding Stair Bookshop | 40 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1. Open: Mon: 10am-6pm | Tue-Thu: 10am-7pm | Fri: 10am-6pm | Sat: 10am-7pm | Sun: 12pm-6pm. Telephone: +353 1 872 6576 | Email: bookshop@winding-stair.com

Wonderful Things!

Three wonderful things happened this week.

The First Thing! This blog was a finalist in the Irish Blog Awards in two categories: Books & Literature and Arts & Culture, so naturally, I was pretty chuffed to attend the awards night in the TRAMLINE Venue, Dublin. The theme of the night was Dia de los Muertos, hence a great excuse to dress up, and the place was only heaving with positivity and good will, and although I didn’t win, I am delighted for all those who did, particularly those in my categories. I keep this blog going because it gives me pleasure to do so, and I get to share, through The Librarian’s Cellar, my favourite books, films, guest interviews and occasional theatre reviews. Through the general side of the Blog, SHE BLOGS, I can write to my heart’s content all things that relate to my personal passion: writing and filmmaking.  So thank you, Irish Blog Awards – the recognition is much appreciated!

The Second Thing! FRAMED, my directorial debut, is in the official selection of The Directors Circle Festival of Shorts in the horror film category. Supporting bold, visionary filmmakers while advancing the art form of film with remarkable cinematic technologies and experiences. the festival takes place in Erie, Pennsylvania, and is the eleventh film festival that FRAMED has been selected to screen at – so far!! I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of such a generous and talented cast and crew, so here I go, thanking them profusely, once again!

The Third Thing! LADY BETH, and a lovely reminder that it is one year since my book won BEST NOVEL at the Carousel Aware Prize Awards. It’s been a fantastic year (moving way to fast though!) and for this too, I am so grateful to everyone who encouraged me to push it out there, read it, praised it, critiqued it, and helped to spread the word. For all these reasons, I would like to pay it forward and have 10 signed copies of Lady Beth to give away. Simply let me know if you would like one.

I am a firm believer in magic, whether it pays you the occasional visit or you make your own, keep creating. It might even return threefold!

I am a writer and filmmaker from Dublin, Ireland. Author of the novels LADY BETH which won the award for BEST NOVEL at the Carousel Aware Prize and ARKYNE, STORY OF A VAMPIRE, I have recently written and directed FRAMED, a short horror film. I have also written several feature-length and short screenplays including ADAM [2013] and the multi-award winner, IN RIBBONS [2015].

On Film: FRAMED begins the festival journey…

I am delighted to announce that FRAMED has been selected to screen at two wonderful film festivals. The 9th Underground Cinema Film Festival and Spook Screen, both happening this September.

Dates and screening times to follow. Although I have written and produced short films, this is my directorial debut, so I am very excited that it will soon be seen on the big screen!

FRAMED tells a spooky tale about a gothic artist, Joe, who’s fantasy is to paint his beautiful wife into one of his rather grotesque works of art. Happenstance will give him his wish – though not in the way that he could ever have expected – when Cathy arranges for his debut exhibition of paintings to be held in a creepy old house… you can check out FRAMED Facebook Page HERE

FRAMED: The Trailer is up!

I am delighted to release the trailer of my directorial debut. Big hugs of gratitude to all who collaborated with me to make this happen. To find out more about the cast and crew, please visit our Facebook page at the link below…
